Dandruff
Dandruff and a dry scalp are two distinct conditions. Dealing with those unwanted flakes can range from a minor annoyance to a serious blow to one’s self-confidence. And while a flaking scalp can feel embarrassing, it is actually incredibly common. A dry, flaky scalp occurs when the scalp's natural pH balance is disrupted, leaving it feeling tight, irritated, and parched—much like how other parts of the body react to a lack of moisture. The main difference is that a dry scalp doesn’t always result in visible flakes. True dandruff, on the other hand, occurs when dead skin cells shed from the top layer of the skin faster than normal. These flakes often fall onto your shoulders or cling to your scalp and hair, and in many cases, are accompanied by persistent itching. The most common triggers for dandruff include stress, hormonal changes, poor diet, and the overgrowth of a specific yeast-like fungus called Malassezia. While many products are effective at clearing up dandruff, if you don't see a lasting improvement over time, we recommend consulting a trichologist.
